What is the coltan?

“Coltan is not really any established mineral. It is a term that is not used in scientific language and that responds to the contraction of two well-known minerals: columbite, niobium oxide with iron and manganese (Fe, Mn), Nb2O6, and tantalite, tantalum oxide with iron and manganese (Fe, Mn), Ta2O6. These oxides constitute a complete solid solution between both minerals; they are scarce in nature and a clear example of how technological progress contributes to materials considered simple mineralogical curiosities are crucial due to their new applications “.
